Budget Calculator — Methodology

Last updated: April 2026

How This Calculator Works

The Budget Calculator uses the 50/30/20 framework to analyze your spending against recommended targets. It categorizes expenses into Needs, Wants, and Savings, then calculates your effective savings rate and debt-to-income ratio.

Inputs and Assumptions

  • Monthly net income: After-tax take-home pay.
  • Needs (50% target): Housing, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments, childcare.
  • Wants (30% target): Dining out, entertainment, subscriptions, clothing, personal.
  • Savings (20% target): Retirement contributions, savings, extra debt payments, investments.

Formula

// Category percentages
needsPercentage = needsTotal / monthlyNetIncome × 100
wantsPercentage = wantsTotal / monthlyNetIncome × 100
savingsPercentage = savingsTotal / monthlyNetIncome × 100

// Savings rate
savingsRate = savingsTotal / monthlyNetIncome × 100

// Debt-to-income ratio
DTI = (housing + minimumDebtPayments) / monthlyNetIncome × 100

// Status per category
needs: over (>55%), on-track (45-55%), under (<45%)
wants: over (>35%), on-track (25-35%), under (<25%)
savings: under (<15%), on-track (15-25%), over (>25% — positive)

// Unallocated
unallocated = monthlyNetIncome - needsTotal - wantsTotal - savingsTotal

Data Sources

  • Elizabeth Warren, "All Your Worth" (2005) — Origin of the 50/30/20 framework.
  • BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey — U.S. household spending patterns by category.
  • C&R Research — Subscription spending data ($219/month average for U.S. consumers).

Limitations

  • The 50/30/20 framework is a guideline, not a prescription — high-cost-of-living areas may require 60%+ for needs.
  • Does not distinguish between "good" and "bad" debt in the needs category.
  • DTI calculation uses a simplified formula — lenders use different DTI definitions.
  • Does not account for irregular income (bonuses, freelance).
  • Employer retirement match is not captured separately.
