Emergency Fund Calculator — Methodology
Last updated: April 2026
How This Calculator Works
The Emergency Fund Calculator determines how many months of essential expenses your current savings covers, compares it to a recommended target based on your employment type and risk factors, and shows how much you need to save monthly to reach the target.
Inputs and Assumptions
- Monthly essential expenses: Housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance — non-discretionary costs.
- Current emergency savings: Liquid savings earmarked for emergencies.
- Employment type: W-2 employed, self-employed, contractor, freelancer.
- Income stability: Stable, variable, or seasonal.
- Dependents: Whether you have children or elderly family to support.
Formula
// Current coverage
coverageMonths = currentSavings / monthlyEssentials
// Recommended months (minimum / target / maximum) by job type
Base: Employed (W-2) = 3 / 4 / 6 months
Self-employed, contractor or freelancer = 5 / 6 / 8 months
Adjustments (target and maximum only):
+1 month if income is variable
+2 months if income is seasonal
+1 month if you have dependents
The largest recommendation is 11 months (self-employed, seasonal income, dependents)
// Target amount
targetAmount = monthlyEssentials × recommendedMonths.target
// Gap
gap = max(0, targetAmount - currentSavings)
// Monthly savings needed
monthlyToGoalIn3Months = gap / 3
monthlyToGoalIn6Months = gap / 6
monthlyToGoalIn12Months = gap / 12Data Sources
- Federal Reserve SHED (Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking) — Emergency savings data showing ~40% of Americans cannot cover an unexpected $400 expense.
- Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — Employment statistics informing risk-based recommendations by employment type.
Limitations
- Does not account for unemployment insurance or disability insurance that may reduce the needed emergency fund.
- Does not factor in access to credit lines or home equity as backup liquidity.
- Recommendations are general guidelines — individual circumstances vary.
- Does not model the opportunity cost of holding cash vs. investing.
